Tihei is led by renowned artist Rangi Kipa whose work is highly esteemed across Aotearoa. He is deeply involved in advancing Māori art, helping to revitalise and specialise in several traditional practices, including the unique Taranaki carving style. His practice in sculpture, carving and tā moko also extends into innovative co-design for public buildings and civic spaces.
Rangi’s artistic experience is woven by a life steeped in other traditional Māori knowledge forms such as taonga puoro, and short-hand weaponry carving. A master of many design languages, he draws his inspiration from his upbringing at Ngapuketurua Pā near Whaitara.
Rangi chairs Te Rūnanga Whakairo, the National Māori carver network supported by Toi Māori Aotearoa, and initiated the Whakakai Mentoring Programme to encourage wāhine Māori working in similar design areas. In 2021, he received the Arts Foundation Laureate Award for Ngā Toi Māori.
